Congratulations to Kevin Thompson (badf85) out of Glasgow, Kentucky and his 1970 Oldsmobile F85 for being the December 2010 Kunzman.com Ride of the Month! Our Scott Webb spotted Kevin's ride at a car show a few months back and nominated him for the ROTM award. Here's some background on Kevin's Olds'...

My car is a 1970 Oldsmobile F85, which is a base model Cutlass as plain as they get. Manual drum brakes, manual steering, rubber flooring instead of carpet and no vents in the dash.

One Heck of a Deal
I bought it in 1986, (for $300)  with the original 250 6cyl engine and a 350 turbo transmission. Not to drive, but to build my hot rod/race car I had dreamed about. It sat around for a couple of years then in 1989, I took it all apart, sold the 6 cyl for $250 and removed anything it didn't need. I put a used stock 1970 olds 455 with only a Edelbrock Torker intake, Holley 750 cfm 3310, and a set of used headers. It ran in the 12s then.

Upgrading a Beast
Over the years I added other parts to get where it is now, in the mid 10s on motor.

The engine is a early 455 block .030 over with Ross dome pistions and it has around 13.5 to 1 compression. A factory nodular cast iron crank shaft, turned .010, with coated Clevite bearings.
Also an ATI hamonic balancer and ATI flex plate. Mellings high volume oil pump. Herbert roller cam and lifters, Harland Sharp rocker arms, Trend push rods and ARP fasteners through out. Edelbrock aluminum heads and Victor intake manifold. Quick Fuel 850cfm E85 carb. Meziere electric water pump. NOS nitrous system. Mallory Unilite distribitor, MSD 6al and plug wires. Kooks 2" headers into a custom 3 1/2" X pipe to Dynomax Ultra flow muflers. Autometer tach and shift light.

The transmission is a Reid power glide case and bell housing, BTE 1.98 low gear set and pro tree trans brake. Custom built 3 1/2" alum. The drive shaft goes back to a 12 chevy rear with 3.90 pro gears.

I Had it painted the winter of '05. It is a PPG custom color called Sour Apple. That's the only thing I have paid someone else to do on the car. I diassembled and reassembled it myself for the paint job, as well as had a custom made fiberglass lift off hood by Glasstek to my specs.

Honors

I've won many awards and trophy's the last 5 years at races, car shows and such. This year it won the Hot Rod of the year award at Hot Rods minor leage baseball team, parades before their saturday home games, by the fans vote.
