Congratulations to Henry Quistian (Henry's 39) out of Los Banos, California and his 1939 Chevy for being the March 2011 Kunzman.com Ride of the Month! Our friends at winningride.com nominated Henry and his family shop built '39 for this months honor.
A Family Affair
Henry and his family started out 6 years ago in their backyard and before long, a couple of projects caught some eyes. Henry's father and uncles have been building cars since the 70's (lowrider's specifically). Over time, things have changed and so has the family shop. They specialize mostly in custom's and muscle car's. The family owned and operated shop isabout 5000sq. feet, equipped with a spray booth, vehicle lift and small office. The handy-work is that of four full-tim employees. They do everything from collision repair, chopped tops, suicide doors, section, channel, fiberglass repair and custom paint jobs (i.e. candy metal flake).
The '39 Build
The build itself was a year and a half, which is impressive by any standard for what the small family shop turned out as an end-result. They started off with just the cab and body. The body was chopped 4", suicide doors fabricated, widened (2 inches) and molded the rear fenders to the quarter panel, molded 1940 Chevy headlights to the front fenders, shaved the vent grilles on the front of the fenders, the hood was chopped and molded to a 3 piece reverse opening system, gangster grille from Chevy's of the 40's, steel running boards added(hand made), roll panel on the rear, shaved and molded tail lights to sgt lights from Chevy's of the 40's and a 3rd brake light was added below the rear window.
The chassis is a Mustang 2 front end, which required channeling the rear 3" to make way for the massive wheels and air ride suspension. The exhaust is a 2 1/2" flowmasters 40 series, with a 2 into 1 custom exhaust flow.
The power-plant consists of a 350 Chevy board 30 over, with a comp cam kit, serpentine setup, and an Edelbrock 650, finished off with headers from Hedman Hedders.
The interior is a hand made dash and all steel center console. Also features a flip out in dash receiver with two tv screens on dash equipped with GPS. The steering wheel is a billet specialties, with an Ididit steering column and a B&M shifter. The upholstery is finished off with bucket seats, ostrich leather and suede flooring.
The Paint is a candy metal flake two tone paint job. Top Coat (top half of vehicle) consists of a base PPG sunset orange with vibrant gold pearl. Four coats of red metal flake house of kolor and four coats of candy red added on top. Bottom coat (bottom half of car): PPG sunset orange, four coats of candy tangerine and then they added 23k gold leafing on the quarter panels and sides of the hood. Lastly, they pinstriped the car and added realistic flames. Six coats of house of kolor clear. Finally, the beauty was cut and buff to a mirror finish
